Why Generative AI Needs More Than Just Code

That’s why ethics and community engagement aren’t optional add-ons. They’re the foundation. Without them, generative AI becomes a black box that no one understands-and no one trusts. And when trust breaks down, adoption stalls, innovation slows, and harm spreads.
Transparency Isn’t Just About Disclosure-It’s About Clarity
Many institutions say they require "transparency" in AI use. But what does that actually mean? Saying "I used ChatGPT" isn’t enough. That’s like saying "I used a calculator" on a math test. It doesn’t tell you how it was used, what was changed, or whether the output was verified.
Harvard’s 2024 guidelines set a real standard: if you’re using generative AI, you must document the tool, the prompt, and the version used. For research, you need to show how you verified the output.
